The towers were built for defense, but also as a display of wealth and power. The Asinelli Tower is the city’s tallest tower at over 300 feet tall. The Garisenda Tower started leaning shortly after it was built, so in the 14th century, the top 40 feet were cut off. The Garisenda Tower remains leaning at a four-degree angle, which is slightly more crooked than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.:
